UGANDA
Kibale National Park
Kibale National Park is one of Uganda’s most beautiful and diverse safari destinations. Located in the western part of the country near Fort Portal, the park sits between 1,100 and 1,590 meters above sea level along the East African Rift Valley. Known as the Primate Capital of East Africa, Kibale offers unmatched chimpanzee trekking experiences, incredible biodiversity, and rich cultural encounters.
Originally gazetted as a forest reserve in 1932, Kibale became a national park in the 1990s to preserve its incredible biodiversity. The park is home to over 350 tree species, including pre-montane, montane, and lowland forest types. Some trees tower up to 55 meters, helping the park receive over 1,700mm of rainfall annually, which supports lush vegetation like ferns, herbs, and grasses.
Kibale is especially known for rare tree species such as Lovoa swynnertonii, Cordia millenii, and Entandrophragma—some of which are endangered and found nowhere else in East Africa.
Kibale Forest is the best place in East Africa to trek and observe chimpanzees in the wild. Over 5,000 chimpanzees live here, making sightings almost guaranteed. These intelligent primates share about 98.7% of their DNA with humans.
Apart from chimpanzees, you’ll also find 13 other primate species including: Red Colobus Monkey (endangered), L’Hoest’s Monkey, Grey-cheeked Mangabey, Red-tailed Monkey, Vervet Monkey, Olive Baboon, Black-and-white Colobus, Bush Babies, Blue Monkeys
This makes Kibale the ultimate destination for primate lovers.
Kibale is a birdwatcher’s paradise with over 374 bird species recorded. Some of the birds you might see include: African Grey Parrot, Great Blue Turaco, Black Bee-eater, Abyssinian Ground Thrush, Red-chested Owlet, Yellow-rumped Tinkerbird, African Pitta, Purple-breasted Sunbird, Western Nicator
The Bigodi Wetlands Sanctuary, located on the edge of the park, is one of the best spots for birding and is home to over 310 bird species and multiple primates.
Beyond primates and birds, Kibale is home to: Forest elephants, Forest buffaloes, Bush pigs, Giant forest hogs, Leopards (rarely seen), Sitatungas (semi-aquatic antelopes), Red and blue duikers, Over 200 butterfly species, 14 species of snakes, 27 species of frogs
The local communities around Kibale include the Batoro and Bakiga. A visit to these communities offers an enriching cultural experience. Learn traditional dances, taste local foods like matoke (steamed bananas), and hear ancestral stories. The Batoro have a rich heritage led by a king known as the Omukama, while the Bakiga are renowned for their resilience and farming traditions.

Kibale National Park can be visited year-round, but the dry seasons (June–September and December–February) are the best times for trekking and sightseeing due to: Clear forest trails, Fewer mosquitoes, Easier wildlife viewing
The wet seasons (March–May and October–November) are ideal for birding, with migratory species and lush greenery. We recommend visiting 2–3 weeks after the rains when the scenery is still vibrant but trails are less muddy.
