Kibale National Park

A Complete Guide to a Safari in Kibale National Park, Uganda

Kibale National Park is one of Uganda’s most beautiful and diverse safari destinations. Located in the western part of the country near Fort Portal, the park sits between 1,100 and 1,590 meters above sea level along the East African Rift Valley. Known as the Primate Capital of East Africa, Kibale offers unmatched chimpanzee trekking experiences, incredible biodiversity, and rich cultural encounters.

Originally gazetted as a forest reserve in 1932, Kibale became a national park in the 1990s to preserve its incredible biodiversity. The park is home to over 350 tree species, including pre-montane, montane, and lowland forest types. Some trees tower up to 55 meters, helping the park receive over 1,700mm of rainfall annually, which supports lush vegetation like ferns, herbs, and grasses.

Kibale is especially known for rare tree species such as Lovoa swynnertonii, Cordia millenii, and Entandrophragma—some of which are endangered and found nowhere else in East Africa.
