Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site nestled in the southwestern region of Uganda. Known for its ancient rainforest, breathtaking scenery, and the rare mountain gorillas, this park is a top safari destination in Africa. Whether you're an adventurer, nature lover, or culture enthusiast, Bwindi offers unforgettable experiences.
Gorilla trekking is the crown jewel of Bwindi. The park is home to nearly half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas. Trekking through thick forest to encounter a gorilla family in its natural habitat is a magical experience that attracts travelers from all over the world.
Bwindi is divided into four trekking sectors:
A gorilla trekking permit in Uganda costs $800 for foreign non-residents, $700 for foreign residents, and
UGX 300,000 for East African citizens. Permits must be booked in advance due to high demand.
Beyond gorilla trekking, Bwindi offers a range of attractions:
With over 350 bird species, including 23 Albertine Rift endemics, Bwindi is a birder’s paradise. Spot species like the African Green Broadbill, Grauer’s Swamp Warbler, and Shelley’s Crimsonwing.
Explore scenic trails through the thick rainforest. The Munyanga River Trail, Waterfall Trail, and Ivy River Trail offer immersive nature experiences with views of butterflies, waterfalls, and rare plants.
The Batwa, also known as "the forest people," are the original inhabitants of Bwindi Forest. A visit to a Batwa community gives insight into their traditional way of life through:
The best months for gorilla trekking are June to August and December to February, when trails are drier and trekking is easier.
Bwindi can be accessed by road or air:
