OVERVIEW Uganda Gorilla Trekking Safari takes you deep into the heart of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, home to nearly half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas. The safari begins and ends in either Kigali, Rwanda (shorter drive), or Entebbe/Kampala, Uganda. In addition to tracking mountain gorillas, you’ll also enjoy a cultural experience with the Batwa pygmies, the forest’s original inhabitants.
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, located in southwestern Uganda near the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo. It is famous for its rich biodiversity, hosting over 120 mammal species, including gorillas, chimpanzees, and forest elephants. The park’s misty hills, dense tropical rainforest, and serene beauty make it one of Africa’s top destinations for primate lovers and nature seekers.
Safari Highlights
Itinerary
Your safari begins with a warm welcome from our driver guide, either at Kigali International Airport in Rwanda or Entebbe International Airport in Uganda. If you start from Kigali, you’ll enjoy a shorter scenic drive through the rolling hills of Rwanda and across the border into Uganda via the Cyanika or Katuna border post. From Entebbe/Kampala, the journey is longer but equally rewarding with beautiful landscapes, roadside markets, and tea plantations.
Along the way, you'll stop for lunch and stretch your legs as you take in the beauty of the countryside. As you approach Bwindi, the air grows cooler and fresher, and mist floats over the dense rainforest canopy—home to the majestic mountain gorillas. In the evening, check into your eco-lodge or safari camp located near the park entrance. Dinner will be served as you unwind and prepare for your big adventure the next day.
After an early breakfast, you’ll head to the park headquarters for a briefing by Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers. You’ll learn about the rules and expectations during gorilla trekking. You'll then be assigned to a specific gorilla family and head into the jungle in a small group with an experienced guide and trackers.
The trek can take between 2 to 6 hours, depending on the movement of the gorillas. The trail winds through thick vegetation, steep slopes, and muddy paths, but the effort is well worth it. Once you find the gorilla family, you’ll have one full hour to observe them. Watch as the gorillas feed, groom each other, rest, and play. It’s a deeply emotional and unforgettable encounter, especially when locking eyes with a silverback.
After this incredible hour, you’ll trek back to the starting point where you’ll receive a gorilla tracking certificate. In the afternoon, you have the option to visit the Batwa pygmies, who will share stories of their life in the forest before they were relocated for conservation. Enjoy traditional songs, dances, and learn about their ancient hunting and survival skills.
Return to your lodge for a well-earned dinner and a peaceful night surrounded by the forest sounds.
On your final day, enjoy a relaxed breakfast with views of the forest before checking out. If you're heading back to Kigali, the drive will take about 4–5 hours, while the journey to Entebbe or Kampala will take roughly 8–9 hours.
Depending on your flight time, you may have a chance to make quick stops for souvenirs or a cultural experience en route. Your driver will ensure you arrive safely at the airport or your preferred drop-off point. This marks the end of your 3-day Uganda gorilla trekking adventure, filled with memories of mountain gorillas, nature, and rich cultural interactions.
